Last week on the blog, we told the story of an amazing mother-and-daughter team. This week, as Mother's Day approaches, I wanted to share the story of my own mother.
My mother Kathy is an incredible woman. She's a former teacher too, just like me. She's someone who has immersed herself in science and technology throughout her whole career. She's been a public speaker, an author, and quite honestly the best mom I could have ever hoped to have.
She's also a breast cancer survivor. And even though her last treatment was over a decade ago, I still remember that time so clearly.
I remember the feelings that everyone in my family experienced–a mixture of determination, denial & constant anxiety. The way that my dad would need to carry my mom up the stairs to bed when she was too weak to stand. The question always hanging in the air: why did this happen to her?
We will never truly know the cause. There was no history of breast cancer in her family. And it's difficult to point to a single source out of the complex web of environmental factors that could have contributed.
But she found a lump under her armpit. And that fact has always stayed with me.
Knowing that my amazing mother could have been taken from me all because of a tiny mass of rogue cells has remained in the back of my mind ever since–and it's especially haunted me since I became a mother myself.
I feel so grateful for the doctors that tended to her, the treatments that helped to save her life, and especially for her own gritty determination to embrace whatever challenge she needed to face in order to beat the cancer.
Determination to Make a Product that Matters
When I started my own skin care company, I knew that I wanted to develop a natural deodorant. Especially now that there's a history of breast cancer in my family.
I wanted women to have an alternative to the traditional options you find at the drugstore. I wanted it to be paraben-free, with no estrogen mimicking chemicals. I wanted to avoid aluminum, propylene glycol and triclosan (all questionable items found on the typical ingredient list).
But I also wanted it to withstand workouts and hot days and long hours without reapplication, a quality I could never find with other natural deodorant brands.
For years, I've been tweaking and adjusting my formulation based on the feedback of my customers. And I'm so proud that we are able to offer a natural probiotic deodorant that applies smoothly, smells great & and controls odor all day.
Because you have enough to worry about on a daily basis–you shouldn't ever have to worry about the effectiveness or safety of your skin care products.
