Unconventionally Educational & Proud of It

Before I began this adventurous chapter of entrepreneurship and motherhood, I was a classroom teacher.

In fact, for most of my young adult life, I lived passionately in the world of traditional academia: I was an education major (special education minor), I had both paid and unpaid internships as teacher’s aides, and I finally worked as a classroom teacher in both elementary and high school settings.
Yet my method of teaching was anything but traditional.
From my college projects to my professional lesson plans, I rarely followed the rules.  I was known a bit for thinking outside the box—performing and recording a song for one of my education finals, for example.

Once, I even told my high school students that very few lessons from that semester would be taught out of the school-assigned text book, so they could just leave it at home (yep, Dead Poet Society moment).
From the time I was a young girl, however, teaching has been in my blood. I just love inspiring that spark of new knowledge, even if my methods are a bit…unconventional.
And even though I’m no longer in the classroom, I still feel the call to teach every single day.
It’s no surprise, therefore, that as Handcrafted HoneyBee has grown, I’ve felt the tug to bring it closer and closer in alignment with that very thing that I feel most passionate about: inspiring joy through learning.
Over the last year, our company has slowly been aligning each of our products to create educational adventures in skin care.

  • Our SmartGirl™ DIY Kits are aimed to inspire an interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts through fun & educational lessons in creating skin care—especially for young girls, who often fall away from interest in the sciences as they approach middle school.
  • Our newly re-branded SmartyPits™ deodorant is intended to not only encourage a smart, aluminum-free deodorant choice, but also to help people learn more about probiotics, understand why they should choose toxin-free deodorant, and the full-size sticks even have a link to a special page where they can learn more cool stuff about hygiene and skin care.
  • Our Undeniable Chemistry soaps and lip balms make learning science a sweet experience by sharing some of the coolest molecules out there—and they even come with cards that teach more about each neurotransmitter, too.

That’s not the end, either. In the coming months, we’ll be bringing even more of our products into full alignment with our mission to help spark learning…and make it fun, too.
I’m not sure if there’s anyone else out there that’s quite doing what we’re doing. After all, few people immediately put “learning” and “skin care” into the same category.

But why not? If you buy a bar of our serotonin soap and learn about why serotonin is so important to your brain (and then get inspired to do some research and learn about how you can properly manage your serotonin levels), then I’ve done my job.
At its heart, I want this company to be one that doesn’t just nourish your skin. We nourish your brain, too (and the brains of the generations that are coming after us).
I’ve never been conventional one…but I’ll always, always be a teacher. And I’m excited that we get to be in this classroom together.
